Overview

Carcinomas are a type of cancer that affects the cells that make up the body's organs and tissues. They develop when cells in a given area of the body lose their ability to control their growth and divide uncontrollably. Carcinomas are the most common type of cancer and can occur in almost any organ system. Treatment of carcinomas can include a combination of surgery, radiation therapy and chemotherapy, depending on the type, stage and location of the cancer. Early detection and prompt treatment of carcinomas is essential for optimal outcome.
