Respiratory Tract Infections
Respiratory tract infections (RTIs) are a group of illnesses that affect the nose, throat and lungs. They can be caused by a range of viruses and bacteria and can range from mild symptoms such as the common cold to severe and life-threatening conditions such as pneumonia. RTIs are a major global problem with significant mortality and morbidity. They are a leading cause of hospitalization, especially amongst the elderly and young children, and can result in serious illness and even death. Treatment typically involves antibiotics or antiviral drugs, depending on the cause of the infection. Vaccines are also available for some of the more common RTIs, including influenza and pneumococcal disease. Prevention of RTIs is important and includes good hygiene practices, vaccination and healthy lifestyle habits.
