Overview

Lower respiratory tract infections (LRTIs) are a type of infectious diseases that target the lungs and airways. They are commonly caused by viruses, including the common cold and the flu, as well as bacteria. Symptoms of LRTIs vary depending on the type of infection, but they often include coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath, congestion, and fever. If left untreated, some LRTIs can lead to more severe illnesses, such as bronchitis, pneumonia, and meningitis. Treatment for LRTIs usually involves rest, hydration, and antibiotics, if the infection is bacterial, or antiviral medications, if the infection is viral. Proper diagnosis and treatment is essential for LRTIs and can help prevent further complications.
