Overview

Artificial intelligence (AI) is a branch of computer science concerned with building systems that perform tasks normally requiring human intelligence, such as learning from data, recognizing patterns, reasoning, understanding language, and making decisions. Modern AI is dominated by machine learning, in which algorithms improve their performance by training on large datasets, and includes subfields such as neural networks, natural language processing, computer vision, and robotics. Its significance lies in the ability to automate complex tasks, extract insight from large volumes of information, and support faster, more consistent decision-making across science, medicine, industry, and public administration, while also raising ethical questions about fairness, transparency, accountability, and the appropriate role of automated systems. Research available through the journal reflects this breadth, including discussions of AI ethics and the engagement of African philosophical traditions, the use of AI in healthcare to improve efficiency and equity, and design-support approaches that combine knowledge management with AI for complex problem-solving. Further studies apply data-mining and classification methods to tasks such as detecting questionable claims in scientific literature and prioritizing administrative work, alongside the use of automated detection in agriculture and analytical techniques in food safety and genomics. Together these works illustrate AI as a general-purpose technology applied across many domains.
