Overview
Social awareness refers to the ability to understand and respond appropriately to the emotions, needs, and concerns of others, as well as to recognize social and cultural dynamics within communities. Research published in Public Health International examines social awareness across diverse health contexts, including studies on mental health disparities among LGBTQ+ youth, self-medication practices among pregnant women in Ghana, and emotional intelligence among medical postgraduate students in India. The journal has explored how social awareness influences health behaviors and outcomes, such as adherence to COVID-19 prevention measures in slum settings and communication patterns between adolescents and parents regarding sexual and reproductive health in Nepal and The Gambia. Additional work addresses knowledge and attitudes toward specific health conditions, including teachers' understanding of epilepsy in Ivory Coast and the application of neurofeedback interventions for autism spectrum disorder. The journal also features perspectives on tobacco control strategies and guidance for professional development in psychoanalysis for social workers. These investigations underscore the importance of social awareness in identifying health disparities, improving health communication, reducing stigma, and designing culturally responsive public health interventions that address the needs of vulnerable and underserved populations.
