Overview

Public health research and development is the field that generates and applies new knowledge, strategies, and technologies to improve the health and well-being of populations and to address health challenges at scale. It links investigation, ranging from epidemiological study and intervention research to the evaluation of programs and the assessment of environmental and behavioral risks, with the translation of findings into practice. Research in this area includes the development and evaluation of prevention programs, such as tobacco-control roadmaps and population-based colorectal cancer screening, and the study of risk factors and their health effects, including the consequences of e-cigarette use and exposure to radiofrequency radiation. It encompasses the assessment of knowledge, attitudes, and practices related to conditions such as cardiovascular disease, the management of pandemics in resource-limited settings, and community health needs assessment through cluster-randomized trials. Attention to data quality and to the social determinants that drive disparities, including violence, stress, and discrimination affecting specific populations, further shapes its agenda. Sub-areas include intervention and prevention research, risk-factor and environmental-health investigation, program development and evaluation, and the study of social determinants and disparities. By producing evidence and developing tools and programs, public health research and development advances the prevention of disease, the strengthening of health systems, and the reduction of inequities across populations.
