Overview
Public health and development is the study of how the health of populations and the social and economic progress of communities are linked. It examines how factors such as access to healthcare, education, sanitation, nutrition, income, and the environment shape health outcomes, and how improvements in health in turn support broader development. The field is multidisciplinary, combining epidemiology, health policy, and the social sciences to design prevention programs, screening initiatives, and health-system strategies that reduce disease burden and advance equity, particularly in low- and middle-income settings. Research published in the journal reflects this orientation toward population health in developing contexts. Studies address tobacco control roadmaps, the planning of population-based cancer screening programs, knowledge and practices around cardiovascular disease, reproductive-health knowledge and service use among rural adolescents, the availability and pricing of medicines, and determinants of child mortality, among other topics. Together these contributions illustrate how public-health research informs program design and policy aimed at improving community well-being. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to public health and development, offering an evidence-based resource for readers interested in the determinants of population health and the interventions that strengthen it.
