Overview

A laser (light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation) is a device that emits spatially and temporally coherent, monochromatic, collimated light, properties that allow energy to be delivered to tissue with high spatial precision and controllable thermal, photochemical, or photomechanical effect. In biomedicine, laser-tissue interaction is governed by wavelength-dependent absorption in chromophores such as water, hemoglobin, and melanin, and by pulse duration, which determines whether ablation, coagulation, or photobiomodulation predominates. Clinical and experimental applications are correspondingly diverse: femtosecond lasers perform precise lens fragmentation in cataract surgery; ablative and fractional erbium:YAG systems treat actinic keratosis and basal cell carcinoma and enhance topical drug delivery; and low-level laser therapy and photobiomodulation are investigated for reparative osteogenesis, fracture pain control, and adjunctive periodontal treatment. Lasers also underpin diagnostic and analytical methods, including tissue optical clearing for deeper imaging, non-invasive glucose measurement, and thin-film characterization. Intravascular laser irradiation of blood has been studied for effects on physiological parameters such as sleep quality. The journal publishes peer-reviewed clinical trials, experimental studies, and reviews examining laser-based surgical, dermatologic, dental, regenerative, and diagnostic interventions and the mechanisms underlying their biological effects.
