Overview

Health organization and management is the field concerned with how health services are structured, governed, financed, and delivered to populations. It studies the design of health systems and institutions, the coordination of resources and personnel, and the leadership and administrative practices that determine whether care is accessible, safe, and effective. Core concerns include quality improvement and the systematic evaluation of strategies for raising standards in facilities, often through frameworks such as the Donabedian model that distinguish structure, process, and outcome. The field examines workforce issues, including the management of staff, leadership skills required of senior clinicians, and the prevention of practitioner burnout that threatens safety. It also addresses risk management in clinical settings, such as the safe administration of drug therapy, the resilience of supply chains under disruption, and the monitoring of indicators like maternal and newborn health to gauge system performance. Organisational responses to emergencies, including the effects of COVID-19 on services and logistics, fall within its scope, as do the ethical dimensions of allocating resources and organising care. Drawing on management science, health-systems research, and public health, the discipline links administrative decisions to disease prevention, health promotion, and population outcomes, providing the evidence and tools needed to organise care efficiently and equitably.
