Overview

Adolescent and child health encompasses the physical, mental, and social well-being of individuals from birth through late adolescence, addressing the unique developmental needs and health challenges that arise during these formative years. Research published in Public Health International on this topic has concentrated primarily on sexual and reproductive health among adolescents across diverse global settings. Studies have examined parent-adolescent communication patterns regarding sexual and reproductive matters in Nepal, Ethiopia, and Nicaragua, identifying barriers and facilitators to these critical conversations. The journal has published investigations into adolescents' knowledge of reproductive health services in Rwanda and perceptions of gender discrimination and equity among young people in India and Guatemala, including evaluation of empowerment programs. Additional research has explored educators' perspectives on sexuality education in The Gambia and examined how college students in India respond to gender-based violence. This body of work reflects the importance of understanding adolescent health within cultural contexts, particularly regarding reproductive rights, gender norms, and access to age-appropriate health information. Addressing these issues is essential for supporting healthy development, preventing adverse health outcomes, and promoting equity during a life stage marked by rapid physical changes, identity formation, and increasing autonomy.
