Somatoform Disorders
Somatoform disorders are a group of mental disorders with physical symptoms that cannot be explained by medical conditions. People affected by somatoform disorders experience physical symptoms that are disproportionate to the present illness, or suggest the presence of a physical disorder. These physical symptoms can include headaches, fatigue, dizziness, chest pain, and abdominal pain; however, the cause of the symptoms is not known. The psychological aspects of somatoform disorders can include excessive anxiety and depression, emotional instability, and a distorted body image. These symptoms can significantly interfere with the daily life activities of affected individuals. Treatment is based on psychotherapy, medications, and support from family and friends. Early intervention and treatment can help reduce the frequency and intensity of physical and psychological symptoms.
