Overview

Growth and development describe the interrelated processes by which an organism increases in size and mass and progressively acquires structural, physiological and functional maturity from conception through to adulthood. In human health, growth refers to measurable increases in anthropometric parameters such as height, weight and head circumference, while development denotes the sequential attainment of motor, cognitive, language, social and emotional capacities. These processes are governed by genetic programmes, endocrine regulation including growth hormone, thyroid hormone and sex steroids, and by environmental inputs such as nutrition, micronutrient status, infection and psychosocial care, with early-life conditions exerting lasting effects on later health. Deviations, including stunting, faltering growth, micronutrient deficiency and developmental delay, signal underlying nutritional, medical or social problems and are key targets for preventive medicine through growth monitoring, immunisation, complementary feeding and health screening. Research relevant to this area includes childhood micronutrient deficiency and household economic status, complementary-feeding practices, the nutritional status of women and children, and the developmental and reproductive-health needs of adolescents. In the broader biological sciences, growth and development also encompass developmental gene regulation and postnatal growth in model organisms. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research on growth, development, nutrition and the determinants of healthy maturation. Where individual studies concern plant or animal growth, they sit within the wider scientific scope rather than human development specifically.
