Overview

Chronic disease prevention encompasses the strategies and interventions used to reduce the incidence, progression, and burden of long-lasting conditions such as cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, chronic respiratory disease, and many cancers. It is commonly organized into three levels: primary prevention, which lowers risk before disease develops by addressing modifiable factors such as poor diet, physical inactivity, tobacco use, and excess body weight; secondary prevention, which uses screening and early detection to intervene before complications arise; and tertiary prevention, which limits disability and improves outcomes in established disease. Because chronic diseases are a leading cause of death and disability worldwide and share common behavioral and environmental risk factors, prevention efforts emphasize health promotion, lifestyle modification, vaccination where relevant, and equitable access to care across the life course. Within the scope of Preventive Medicine And Care, research in this area examines how individual behavior, clinical practice, and population-level measures can curb the development and impact of chronic conditions. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to chronic disease prevention and the reduction of modifiable risk factors that drive long-term illness.
