Overview

Cancer is a group of diseases characterized by the uncontrolled proliferation of abnormal cells that can invade adjacent tissues and spread to distant sites through metastasis. It arises from the accumulation of genetic and epigenetic alterations that deregulate cell-cycle control, apoptosis, and DNA repair, enabling sustained growth, immune evasion, and angiogenesis. Cancers are classified by tissue of origin and molecular profile, and their behaviour ranges from indolent to highly aggressive. Within preventive medicine, the emphasis falls on reducing incidence and mortality through modifiable risk-factor control, vaccination against oncogenic agents, early detection by screening, and timely diagnosis, since outcomes depend heavily on stage at presentation. Research relevant to this area includes microRNA-21 expression as a prognostic marker in esophageal cancer, uptake of breast and cervical cancer screening among defined populations, development of population-based colorectal cancer screening programs, dietary and lifestyle contributions to colorectal cancer, descriptive epidemiology of thyroid cancer, and survival analyses among breast cancer patients. Studies of complementary cancer prevention and of cellular mechanisms of relapse further broaden the scope. Such work links screening, risk factors, and molecular markers to cancer control. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research on cancer prevention, screening, epidemiology, and biomarkers, alongside studies of tumour biology and outcomes.
