Overview
Adolescent medicine is the branch of healthcare devoted to the physical, psychological, and social health of young people during the transition from childhood to adulthood, generally spanning roughly ages 10 to 21. It addresses the distinctive developmental changes of this period, including puberty, growth, cognitive and emotional maturation, and the emergence of independent health behaviours. Care in adolescent medicine emphasises prevention and early intervention, covering areas such as mental health, reproductive and sexual health, nutrition, substance use, immunisation, and chronic-disease management, while accounting for the confidentiality and developmental considerations specific to this age group. Within preventive medicine, adolescence is recognised as a critical window in which behaviours and risk factors established can shape long-term health. Preventive Medicine And Care covers prevention-oriented research across populations, including studies relevant to adolescent well-being such as an investigation of psychosocial determinants of marijuana use among junior high school students and an evaluation of community-based mentoring and coaching schemes for school-aged children's mental health. These reflect the journal's attention to behavioural and mental-health risk factors during youth. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to adolescent medicine and the preventive care of young people.
