Overview

Sustainable agriculture is an approach to food and fiber production that meets present needs while conserving the environmental, economic, and social resources on which future production depends. It emphasizes soil health, efficient water and nutrient use, biodiversity, and the integration of crops and livestock, seeking to maintain yields while reducing dependence on synthetic inputs and limiting environmental harm. Core practices include conservation tillage, crop diversification and rotation, residue retention, biofertilizers and mycorrhizal inoculation, permaculture, and integrated nutrient and pest management, increasingly informed by precision-agriculture tools and biotechnology. Sustainability also addresses resilience to climate change and the land-degradation–food-security nexus, balancing productivity with stewardship of soil and water. Research relevant to this area examines permaculture practices for sustainable agriculture, the prospects of agricultural graduates and sustainable farming, strategic shifts to improve fertilizer response and grain production, the climate change–land degradation–food security nexus, conservation machinery for crop cultivation, biofertilizer use for crop and milk quality, biotechnological applications of cyanobacteria in agriculture, and the application of soil and residue management for agricultural sustainability. This peer-reviewed literature reflects the agronomic, ecological, and climate-adaptive dimensions of sustainable production, situating sustainability within the broader study of agriculture and precision farming, where resource-efficient methods aim to reconcile productivity with long-term environmental viability.
