Overview
Climate change is the long-term alteration of global and regional temperature, precipitation, and weather patterns, driven primarily by increased atmospheric concentrations of greenhouse gases from human activities such as fossil-fuel combustion, deforestation, and land-use change. In an agricultural context, climate change is significant because shifting rainfall regimes, rising temperatures, and more frequent extreme events directly affect crop yields, water availability, soil quality, and the viability of farming systems. Core aspects of the topic include greenhouse-gas emissions and their atmospheric accumulation, observed and projected warming, sea-level rise, and the increasing intensity of droughts, floods, and other hydrological extremes. Closely related themes are adaptation and risk reduction, mitigation strategies, and the carbon cycle, including carbon uptake and sequestration by terrestrial and aquatic vegetation as a route toward net-zero emissions. The journal publishes research touching on these dimensions, including the interaction between climate change, land degradation, and food security; statistical and machine-learning analysis of rainfall and climate patterns; consequences for freshwater systems and fisheries; impacts on public health; and the role of biotechnology in responding to climate-related challenges. Together these strands illustrate how climate change is studied across environmental, agricultural, ecological, and human-health perspectives.
