Overview

Plant breeding is the science and practice of improving plants by deliberately altering their genetic makeup to develop varieties with desirable traits such as higher yield, disease and pest resistance, stress tolerance, improved nutritional quality, and adaptation to specific environments. It combines methods including controlled crossing, selection across generations, the use of genetic diversity and heritability, and modern tools such as molecular markers, genomic selection, and genetic engineering. By identifying and combining beneficial genes, breeders create crops better suited to the needs of farmers, consumers, and changing climates, making plant breeding central to agriculture and food security. Research in Plant Genetics and Crop Research engages directly with these methods, including work on scientific and technological interventions for attaining precision in plant genetics and breeding, the evaluation of selection indices for heat tolerance and their correlation with yield in chickpea genotypes, and the use of selection indices to assess sugar beet genotypes under drought stress. Such studies illustrate how genetic variation is measured and exploited to improve crop performance. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to plant breeding, crop genetics, and the development of improved plant varieties.
