Overview
Plant biodiversity is an essential component of all terrestrial ecosystems, providing essential ecological services such as air and water recycling, soil formation and nutrition, climate regulation, and natural resource production. Plants are among the most diverse species on Earth, and the number of known plant species continues to increase annually. They are an integral part of the global food chains, and provide food, clothing, medicine, and fuel for billions of people around the world. Plant diversity also helps to reduce soil erosion and floods, and to mitigate the effects of climate change, as well as providing habitats for other species. The conservation of this biodiversity is essential for the health of natural systems and for the livelihoods of people throughout the world.
