Overview
Plant products are materials derived from plants and their tissues, including fruits, seeds, leaves, roots, bark, and whole-plant extracts, used in nutrition, medicine, agriculture, and industry. They encompass primary metabolites such as carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, and dietary fibre, and a vast array of secondary metabolites, including phenolics, flavonoids, alkaloids, saponins, and essential oils, that confer antioxidant, antimicrobial, and other bioactivities. The study of plant products spans phytochemical analysis, extraction and standardisation, evaluation of biological activity, and their development into functional foods, nutraceuticals, and pharmacologically active agents. Research in this area examines the antimycotic activity of leaf extracts of medicinal plants against dermatophytes, the traditional uses of medicinal plants, the redox potential of phytochemicals and their impact on DNA, and the move from personalised medication toward customised nutrition. Adjacent work addresses polysaccharide-modifying enzymes, industrial and biotechnological applications of algae, the identification of adulterants in plant-derived dietary supplements, trace-element analysis of seeds, and the role of nutraceuticals and functional foods in health. Studies draw on phytochemistry, chromatographic and analytical methods, and bioassays of plant-derived materials. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research on plant products, their constituents, and their applications.
