Overview

Plant development is the set of coordinated processes by which a plant grows and acquires form, progressing from embryo and seed through germination, vegetative growth, and reproduction. It is driven by the activity of meristems, populations of pluripotent cells that generate new tissues and organs, and is regulated by hormones, gene-expression programmes, epigenetic mechanisms including non-coding RNAs, and responses to environmental cues such as light, water, nutrients, and biotic and abiotic stress. Developmental events such as cell division and differentiation, organogenesis, plastid biogenesis, and root and shoot architecture determine plant productivity, adaptation, and survival. Research in this area examines the emerging roles of plant circular RNAs in regulation, the formation of proplastids in the apical meristem of wheat, and modelling approaches to plant anatomy and development. Adjacent work addresses root system architecture and root phenotyping under biotic and abiotic stress, the physiological and proteomic responses of cereal crops to drought and salt stress, and the modulation of growth and productivity in various crops. Studies draw on molecular, anatomical, physiological, and modelling methods to dissect how plants build and adjust their structure. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research on Plant Cell Development, meristem function, and the regulation of plant growth and form.
