Plant Cell Walls
Plant cell walls are an important structure that provides support and shape to plant cells. They are composed of several layers of cellulose, hemicellulose, and pectin, which are embedded in a matrix of proteins and other polysaccharides. These walls provide a rigid and relatively impermeable barrier that protects the cell from the environment. They can also allow the cell to resist pressure, control its water balance, serve as a barrier against infection, and provide structural support for the complex shapes of some plant cells. Plant cell walls are also a major component of dietary fiber, making them an important component of a healthy diet.
