Overview
Environmental pollution and management encompasses the study of contaminants introduced into ecosystems, their distribution and effects, and strategies to mitigate environmental degradation. Research published in Plant and Animal Ecology on this topic examines pollution across diverse ecological settings, with particular attention to heavy metal contamination in soil and water systems. Studies have investigated the distribution of lead, cadmium, and chromium in soils near waste dumpsites, assessed heavy metal levels in aquatic plants and water bodies near industrial sites, and characterized the environmental risks posed by these contaminants in various Nigerian ecosystems. The journal has also published work on industrial effluent impacts, including cassava mill discharges and their ecological consequences, as well as effects of petroleum industry operations on surface water quality. Additional research addresses wetland water quality changes following water replenishment interventions and phytoplankton community responses to environmental conditions in creek systems. Solid waste characterization studies contribute to understanding pollution sources in commercial settings. This body of work matters because it documents pollution patterns in understudied regions, provides baseline data for environmental risk assessment, and informs management strategies to protect both terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems from anthropogenic contamination.
