Overview

Climate change and global warming describe the long-term rise in Earth's average surface and ocean temperatures and the broader shifts in climate patterns that accompany it. Global warming refers specifically to the increase in mean temperature driven largely by the accumulation of greenhouse gases, while climate change encompasses the wider set of consequences, including altered precipitation, more frequent and intense extreme weather and hydrological events, sea-level rise, and shifts in the distribution of species and human populations. The dominant drivers are anthropogenic: combustion of fossil fuels, deforestation, and intensive land use that raise atmospheric concentrations of carbon dioxide, methane, and other gases. These changes carry significant implications for environment and health, as extreme hydrological events heighten exposure to flooding, water insecurity, and disease, making the identification of risk determinants central to adaptation and risk reduction. In Plant and Animal Ecology, climate change reshapes habitats, phenology, community composition, and the cycling of carbon and nutrients, while also interacting with pollution and other stressors on ecosystems. Research spans monitoring and attribution, vulnerability assessment, mitigation through emissions reduction and carbon sequestration, and emerging tools such as biotechnology. Understanding these coupled physical and ecological processes is essential for protecting biodiversity, ecosystem services, and human well-being.
