Overview
Biomass refers to the total mass of living organisms in a given area or ecosystem, as well as organic material derived from plants and animals that can be used as a renewable resource. Research published in this journal addresses biomass across multiple dimensions of plant and animal ecology, including its role in marine food webs, agricultural sustainability, and biotechnological applications. Studies have examined how Antarctic krill biomass supports baleen whale populations and other predators in changing ocean conditions, and how seamount-associated pelagic ecosystems depend on krill-to-whale biomass transfers. Agricultural research has explored biomass management through crop residue retention in semi-arid regions, intercropping systems, and fertilizer optimization strategies to improve crop yields and soil health. The journal has also published work on biomass as a biotechnological resource, investigating algae cultivation for industrial applications, microbial biomass for heavy metal biosorption, and plant cell culture systems for producing valuable alkaloid compounds. These investigations reflect biomass as both an ecological indicator of ecosystem health and productivity, and as a practical resource for addressing challenges in food security, environmental remediation, and sustainable energy production.
