Overview

Pediatric surgery is the surgical speciality concerned with the diagnosis, operative treatment, and perioperative care of infants, children, and adolescents. It addresses conditions that differ in important ways from those seen in adults, including congenital malformations present at birth, as well as acquired diseases, injuries, and tumours affecting the young. Pediatric surgeons operate on the abdominal organs, chest, and other regions, and increasingly use minimally invasive approaches such as laparoscopy, thoracoscopy, and endoscopy to reduce trauma and speed recovery in small patients. Because children are still growing and have distinct physiology, nutritional needs, and responses to illness and surgery, pediatric surgical care requires careful attention to fluid balance, pain management, and long-term developmental outcomes, often in coordination with paediatricians, anaesthetists, neonatologists, and nutrition specialists. The field also intersects with fetal and neonatal medicine, where some conditions are now recognised and managed before or shortly after birth. Within the scope of pediatric health and nutrition, which addresses the health, growth, and wellbeing of children, surgery is an important component of care for serious and complex conditions. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to child health and pediatric clinical care.
