Overview
Foot and mouth disease (FMD) is an infectious, virus-caused disease that affects cloven-hoofed animals, including cattle, pigs, sheep, goats and deer. It is highly contagious and can spread quickly, leading to significant economic losses in the agricultural industry. FMD can cause lesions and blisters on the feet and mouth, as well as fever and inappetence. It is most commonly seen in countries with high concentrations of livestock and can be detected through PCR testing. Vaccines are available to protect animals from the disease, and biosecurity measures should be in place to prevent its spread. FMD is an important concern for animal health and welfare, as well as food safety, and should be monitored closely in order to reduce its impact on livestock production.
