Overview
Down syndrome is a genetic disorder caused by a third copy of chromosome 21, resulting in physical and intellectual disabilities. It affects about one in 800 births, making it the most common chromosomal disorder. Most people with Down syndrome have mild to moderate intellectual disabilities, and associated physical features such as a flat face and short stature. Early intervention and supports can help improve outcomes for children with Down syndrome. There are a variety of treatments, supports, and services available to help people with Down syndrome live meaningful, fulfilling lives.
