Overview

Dementia is a clinical syndrome marked by a progressive decline in cognitive abilities, including memory, thinking, language, judgment, and behavior, severe enough to interfere with everyday functioning and independence. It is not a single disease but a set of symptoms caused by various underlying conditions, of which Alzheimer's disease is the most common, alongside vascular, mixed, and other forms. Dementia primarily affects older adults, and the number of people living with it is expected to rise substantially as populations age. Because it progresses over time and affects multiple domains of function, dementia has profound consequences for patients, families, and caregivers, and care often spans medical treatment, behavioral support, and assistance with daily living. Research published in this journal emphasizes care and management as well as the cognitive and psychological dimensions of dementia. Contributions include studies of non-pharmacological interventions, such as virtual reality, videophone communication, and cognitive stimulation, and the management of behavioral and psychological symptoms, including depression, agitation, and aggression. Other work examines the relationship between depression, stressful life events, and dementia risk, distinctions between knowledge gaps and misconceptions among caregivers, mild cognitive impairment as a precursor stage, and analytic approaches such as functional connectivity analysis. Across these themes, the field focuses on accurate diagnosis, person-centered care, caregiver support, symptom management, and interventions that aim to preserve function and quality of life.
