Toxocariasis

Toxocariasis is an infection caused by the roundworm parasite, Toxocara. It is most commonly spread via eggs found in animal feces, and can be transmitted to humans who have had contact with contaminated soil, ingestion of contaminated soil, or contact with contaminated animals. Humans are the only known host for this parasite, and the infection, if left untreated, can lead to serious health problems. Symptoms may include fever, nausea, joint pain, abdominal pain, and rashes. Treatment consists of medication which can eliminate the infection, although the majority of cases resolve themselves without treatment. Toxocariasis is an important parasitic disease to be aware of, and prevention measures include proper sanitation and hygiene practices.
