Overview

Protozoan models are single-celled eukaryotic organisms, or protozoa, used as experimental systems to study fundamental biological processes and to investigate disease. Because protozoans are relatively simple, easy to culture, and share many basic cellular mechanisms with more complex organisms, they serve as tractable models for examining processes such as cell division, motility, metabolism, gene expression, and host-parasite interactions. In Parasite Research specifically, protozoan parasites are studied both as the cause of important human and animal diseases and as model systems for understanding infection, immune evasion, drug action, and resistance. Examining these organisms can reveal how parasites establish infection, how they are transmitted, and how diagnostic and therapeutic strategies might be improved. Within the scope of this journal's focus on Parasite Research, work on protozoan infections contributes to this understanding, including an epidemiological profile of intestinal protozoan infection from a hospital-based survey in Dakar, Senegal, and a study of domestic pigeons as a potential source for transmitting human protozoan parasites. Such studies document the prevalence, transmission, and clinical relevance of protozoan parasites that underpin their study as biological and disease models. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to protozoan models and parasitology.
