Protistology
Protistology is the study of protists, a group of eukaryotic organisms. Protists have been identified in bacteria, fungi, plants and animals. They are important components of the global ecosystem, and provide critical services like cycling of nutrients, energy, and carbon among other things to other organisms. Protists can also be used in biotechnology, bioremediation and biofouling control. They are being used to develop new diagnostic methods and treatments for diseases, such as cancer, malaria and HIV/AIDS, as well as to produce food and industrial products. They also offer a great source of natural compounds with potential pharmaceutical uses. Understanding the biology of protists is essential for the sustainable management of the global environment and for the development of new products and services.
