Overview
Intestinal parasites in children are infections of the digestive tract caused by parasitic organisms such as helminths, the parasitic worms, and protozoa, single-celled parasites, that live in the intestines. These infections are especially common among children in regions with limited access to clean water, adequate sanitation, and hygiene, and they spread through contaminated food, water, soil, or contact. Intestinal parasitic infections can cause a range of health problems in children, including diarrhea, abdominal pain, anemia, malnutrition, and impaired growth and development, with the burden falling most heavily on young and school-age children. Because children may carry these infections with few obvious symptoms while still suffering nutritional and developmental harm, early detection through stool examination and other diagnostic methods is important, as are preventive measures such as improved sanitation, safe water, hygiene education, and deworming programs. Research published through Parasite Research has examined the prevalence and risk factors of these infections in pediatric populations, including studies of intestinal parasitic helminths among primary school children and the epidemiology of intestinal protozoan infections, reflecting the field's focus on understanding and controlling parasitic disease. As a topic, intestinal parasites in children highlight the intersection of infection, nutrition, and public health. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to intestinal parasites in children.
