Gram Negative Bacteria
Gram negative bacteria are found ubiquitous in the environment and are an essential part of the natural microbial community. They are important for regulating nutrient cycling and providing resistance to other, more pathogenic microorganisms. In addition, some species of Gram negative bacteria can be beneficial for human health, playing a role in digestion and providing beneficial probiotic effects. The presence of Gram negative bacteria can also indicate the presence of disease causing organisms, such as E. coli, and can therefore be important for early detection and intervention. Gram negative bacteria are also extensively used in biotechnology and industry, for a range of different processes such as food production and production of antibiotics.
