Overview
Filariasis is a tropical and subtropical disease caused by parasitic worms known as filarial worms. It is spread by mosquitoes and infects the lymphatic vessels leading to severe swelling, disfigurement and disability. Filariasis is an important public health problem in many countries, particularly in the tropics and subtropics. Treatment is available, however preventative measures such as wearing long-sleeved clothing, using insect repellent and avoiding standing water are important to decrease the risk of infection. Filariasis is an infectious disease that can be managed through proper diagnosis, treatment and prevention. Therefore, it is important to be aware of the risks and take measures to reduce the risk of infection.
