Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a serious lung disease that makes it difficult to breathe. It is a progressive, yet manageable condition that can severely impact one’s quality of life. It is the third leading cause of death in the United States and one of the most common chronic diseases around the world. COPD is often caused by smoking cigarettes and exposure to air pollution, but can also be caused by a genetic mutation. Symptoms of COPD include coughing, increased mucus production, shortness of breath, chest tightness, and wheezing. Treatment for COPD includes lifestyle changes, quitting smoking, medications, and oxygen therapy. The earlier COPD is diagnosed, the better its prognosis, so it is important to seek medical attention if you experience any of the symptoms.
