Overview

Total laryngectomy is a surgical procedure in which the entire larynx, or voice box, is removed. It is most often performed to treat advanced laryngeal cancer that cannot be controlled by radiation, chemotherapy, or more limited surgery. Because the larynx plays a central role in producing voice and in separating the airway from the digestive tract, its removal permanently changes the way a person breathes, swallows, and speaks: after surgery, breathing occurs through a permanent opening in the neck, and patients must learn alternative methods of communication, such as esophageal speech, an electrolarynx, or a surgically placed voice prosthesis. The procedure is significant and life-altering, requiring careful patient selection and comprehensive rehabilitation. Research relevant to this topic includes an analysis of predictors of adverse events after total laryngectomy using a national surgical database, a comparison of functional outcomes between supraglottic horizontal laryngectomy and supracricoid partial laryngectomy, and an examination of the importance of the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio in squamous-cell carcinoma of the larynx. These studies address the surgical outcomes, functional consequences, and prognostic factors associated with laryngeal cancer and its treatment. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to laryngectomy and the management of laryngeal disease.
