Tongue
-tie Tongue-tie (also called ankyloglossia) is a condition in which a person’s tongue is attached to the floor of their mouth by a short, tight piece of skin (the lingual frenulum). It is usually present at birth, and it can cause difficulties with breastfeeding and speech. Tongue-tie can cause many problems, such as difficulty with eating, speaking, and learning, as well as social issues. Treatment for tongue-tie often involves frenotomy, a procedure where the lingual frenulum is cut, thus allowing the tongue to move more freely. This procedure can improve breastfeeding success and reduce long-term health risks. In some cases, speech therapy or orthodontic devices may be necessary to help with the effects of the condition. Awareness of tongue-tie and its potential complications is essential for proper diagnosis and treatment.
