Swallowing Disorders
Swallowing disorders, also known as dysphagia, are a group of conditions characterized by difficulty or inability to swallow. Swallowing is a complex process that involves coordination between muscles and nerves, so a swallowing disorder can be caused by problems in any of these areas. Dysphagia can cause difficulty in eating, drinking, and taking medication, and can lead to serious health issues such as dehydration, malnutrition, and aspiration pneumonia. Treatment may include adjusting the diet, swallowing exercises, and speech therapy. Speech-language pathologists work with physicians to diagnose and manage swallowing disorders. Early diagnosis and treatment of dysphagia can help improve quality of life and reduce the risks associated with the disorder.
