Overview

Rhinology and sinus surgery is the subspecialty of otolaryngology, or ear, nose, and throat medicine, that deals with disorders of the nose and paranasal sinuses and their surgical treatment. It addresses conditions such as chronic rhinosinusitis, nasal polyps, deviated septum, turbinate enlargement, nasal obstruction, and tumors of the sinonasal region. Much modern sinus surgery is performed endoscopically, using thin instruments and a camera passed through the nostrils to remove diseased tissue, open blocked drainage pathways, and restore normal airflow without external incisions, with the aims of improving breathing, relieving symptoms, and enhancing quality of life. Research in Otolaryngology Advances and related OpenAccessPub journals addresses the surgical management of nasal conditions, including a study examining inferior turbinate surgery and the difficulties of balancing the decision to operate with the selection of an appropriate technique. Such work reflects the clinical judgment involved in treating nasal obstruction and the range of approaches available to surgeons. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to rhinology and sinus surgery and the diagnosis and treatment of nasal and sinus disorders.
