Overview

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is a form of head and neck cancer that affects the nasopharynx (the upper part of the throat behind the nose). It is the most common type of head and neck cancer in certain parts of the world, such as the Middle East and China. NPC can be difficult to diagnose because early symptoms can be subtle or non-existent. Risk factors for this cancer include exposure to the Epstein-Barr virus, ethnic background, and environmental factors such as smoking. Treatment options for NPC include chemotherapy, radiation therapy, surgery, and targeted therapy. Early diagnosis and treatment usually leads to better outcomes.
