Overview

In clinical medicine the head denotes the superior anatomical region comprising the cranium, brain, face, and the specialised structures of the eyes, ears, nose, and oral cavity, together with the closely related neck. It is the focus of several disciplines, including head and neck oncology, neurosurgery and traumatology, otolaryngology, and ophthalmology, because of the dense concentration of neural, vascular, and sensory structures it contains. Pathology of this region encompasses traumatic brain and head injury, tumours of the upper aerodigestive tract, and disorders of the optic nerve head and vestibular system. Research in this area examines head and neck cancer biology, including epigenetic and long non-coding RNA biomarkers and tobacco- and alcohol-associated carcinogenesis, and the management of locally advanced pediatric nasopharyngeal carcinoma. Further studies report optic nerve head drusen and intraocular pressure, head and neck manifestations of post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorder, motorcycle-related head and limb injuries, factors affecting traumatic brain injury outcome, and a maneuver for benign paroxysmal positional vertigo arising from inner-ear structures. Work on the organisational skills required of a head physician reflects a distinct administrative usage. The journal publishes peer-reviewed clinical and translational research relevant to disorders of the head and neck.
