Overview
Injury Liver ischemia reperfusion injury (LIRI) is a type of organ injury that occurs when blood flow to the liver is disrupted and then restored. It is a common consequence of liver surgery and transplantation, as well as of other conditions such as shock and sepsis. LIRI can lead to inflammation, organ failure, shock, and even death. Researchers are studying ways to reduce the incidence and severity of LIRI. Possible treatments include pharmacological agents, nutrition, and exercise, as well as therapies involving stem cells and other regenerative medicine approaches. With better understanding of the underlying mechanisms of LIRI, researchers hope to improve outcomes for people at risk of developing this condition.
