Overview
Hand transplantation is a surgical procedure in which a patient receives a new hand, with connected nerves and blood vessels, from a donor. The procedure is complex and requires significant expertise, including a multidisciplinary medical team to evaluate donor tissue suitability, an immunologists to minimize the risk of tissue rejection, and surgeons to connect the new hand to the patient. Hand transplantation can greatly improve a person's quality of life by allowing them to perform activities and tasks that were not possible before. This includes the regaining of lost functions such as grasp and pinch, as well as the restoration of normal aesthetic appearance. Hand transplantation offers a valuable alternative to prosthetics, which are incapable of providing tactile sensation, movement and power.
