Overview
The occipital lobe is the posterior region of the cerebral cortex primarily responsible for processing visual information. Research published in this journal addresses the occipital lobe across diverse clinical and experimental contexts. Studies have examined malignant brain neoplasms affecting various brain regions including the occipital lobe in specific populations, and documented cases of reversible posterior encephalopathy syndrome, a condition that can involve occipital lobe pathology. Neuroimaging research has explored brain areas activated during extreme breath-hold diving, while computational modeling has investigated retinal and cortical contributions to visual cortex neuron firing patterns in schizophrenia, specifically examining the primary visual cortex (V1) located in the occipital lobe. Additional work has analyzed EEG frequency responses during altered states of consciousness, which involve coordinated activity across multiple brain regions including occipital areas. Case reports have documented infectious processes such as hydatid cysts affecting multiple cerebral locations. This body of work reflects the occipital lobe's significance in visual processing, its vulnerability to various pathological conditions, and its role in broader neural networks underlying perception and consciousness.
