Overview
Eye research is the scientific investigation of the structure, function, diseases, and treatment of the eye and the visual system. It spans basic studies of ocular anatomy and physiology, the mechanisms of vision, and the causes of eye disease, as well as applied work on diagnosis, screening, prevention, and therapy. Areas of inquiry include conditions such as cataract, glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration, retinopathy, refractive error, and visual impairment, together with the development and evaluation of imaging, surgical, and rehabilitative techniques and the delivery of eye-care services to populations. As part of Ophthalmic Science, eye research integrates clinical ophthalmology, optometry, and vision science to improve understanding of how the eye works and how sight can be preserved and restored. The journal's research relevant to this field includes a comparison of the Titmus vision screener with the Snellen chart, a survey of the influence of visual impairment on quality of life among patients at a low-vision centre in Ghana, and studies of retinopathy of prematurity and the accessibility of ophthalmic services in rural communities. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to the eye, vision, and ophthalmic care.
