Overview

Eye health denotes the preservation of normal ocular structure and visual function and the prevention, detection, and management of conditions that impair sight. It draws on anatomy, physiology, pathology, optometry, and public health, integrating clinical assessment with population-level measures of access and screening. Maintaining eye health depends on accurate refractive correction, routine examination, and early identification of sight-threatening disease such as glaucoma, cataract, age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and retinopathy of prematurity. Visual acuity testing, vision screening instruments, and structural imaging support case-finding, while quality-of-life measures capture the functional burden of visual impairment, particularly in low-vision populations. Eye health is also shaped by social determinants, including geographic access to ophthalmic services, the availability of trained personnel, and the feasibility of remote or community-based examination. Preventable and treatable causes of visual loss remain a major concern in rural and resource-limited settings. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research relevant to eye health, including studies on barriers to and accessibility of ophthalmic services, vision screening validity, the impact of visual impairment on quality of life, risk identification for retinopathy of prematurity, and intraocular factors affecting retinal structure and function.
