Overview

Insulin resistance is a condition in which the body's cells respond poorly to insulin, the hormone that signals cells to take up glucose from the blood, so that more insulin is needed to achieve the same effect. As resistance develops, the pancreas compensates by producing additional insulin, but over time blood glucose levels can rise, setting the stage for prediabetes and type 2 diabetes. Insulin resistance is closely linked with obesity, particularly excess abdominal and visceral fat, and is a central feature of metabolic syndrome, raising the risk of cardiovascular disease and other metabolic complications. Lifestyle factors including diet, physical activity, body weight, and sleep strongly influence insulin sensitivity, and management typically emphasizes weight reduction, exercise, dietary change, and, when needed, medication. Within the scope of this journal's focus on obesity management, insulin resistance is a key mechanism connecting excess adiposity to metabolic disease. Research published in the journal has examined related questions, including the effect of cinnamon supplementation on insulin resistance and body mass index in women with polycystic ovary syndrome, and the identification of insulin-sensitive versus insulin-resistant obese postmenopausal women using surrogate indices of insulin sensitivity. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to insulin resistance and obesity management.
