Overview
Hyperglycemia is a medical condition in which the levels of blood glucose (sugar) are higher than normal. It is most commonly seen in people with diabetes, who are unable to produce or respond to insulin, a hormone responsible for regulating blood glucose levels. When left untreated, hyperglycemia can lead to a number of long-term health complications such as heart attack, stroke, kidney and nerve damage, and vision loss. Early diagnosis and treatment with lifestyle modifications, medications and insulin therapy help to keep blood glucose levels within a safe range and prevent complications.
