Basal Metabolic Rate
Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) is the minimum amount of energy necessary to keep the body functioning at rest and is the amount of energy expended daily by the body to maintain essential bodily processes. BMR is a vital indicator of metabolism and reflects the health and wellness of the body. By understanding one’s BMR, individuals are better able to make dietary and lifestyle decisions that support their overall health. BMR can be measured directly or estimated through indirect methods. Knowing one’s BMR can also help in understanding how food intake and physical activity should be modified to maintain weight and support health-related goals.
